Gujarat

Gujarat is India’s westernmost state, often refered as Jewel of Wes India it has varied terrain and numerous sacred sites. On the northern side it is bordered by Rajasthan, Maharashtra on the southern border, Madhya Pradesh to the east, and the Arabian Sea and the Pakistani province of Sindh to the west. The coast line of Gujarat is more than 1600km and lies mostly on katiawar peninsula. Its capital city is Gandhinagar, while its largest city is Ahmedabad. Gujarat is home to the Gujarati-speaking people of India.

In its urban center of Ahmedabad is the most unique textile jewel, the Calico Museum of Textiles, displaying antique and modern Indian fabrics. The Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque), built in the 15th century, has a huge courtyard and a columned design.

The state of Gujarat has been hub of migratory birds from central Europe, its rare sightings make it most sought after place for nature lovers. The last of prides of Asiatic Lion grace the Sasan Gir wildlife Sanctuary, it draws wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world.

The cultural heritage, craftsmanship, art and textiles list of Gujarat is endless. The kutch is hub of textile and craftsmanship with unique traditional artisans blessed with great imagination.

Gujarat also claims a special relationship to the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi. He was born in Sabarmati, he ignited the Satyagraha movement from here, made his Salt March here. Spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi’s base from 1917–1930 was Sabarmati Ashram, where his living quarters remain on view and his legacy remains a vibrant part of public discourse and private lives.
