Known as the Venice of the East, Alappuzha has always enjoyed an important place in the maritime history of Kerala . Today, it is famous for its boat racing, backwaters, beaches, marine products and the coconut fiber industry. Alappuzha beach is a popular picnic spot. The pier, which extends into the sea here is more than 137 years old. Entertainment in the Vijaya Beach Park add to the attraction of the beach. Another wonderful experience while in Alappuzha is a houseboat cruise. Those found in the backwaters of Alappuzha are actually new version of Kettuvallams from ancient times. The original Kettuvallams or rice barges used to carry tons of rice and spices. The ‘boat with knots’ Kettuvallam or so called because the whole boat is held together with coconut knots only. In recent times, houseboats come with all the amenities of a good hotel, including furnished rooms, modern bathrooms, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. And you can always enjoy panoramic views of the stagnant life during your stay in a houseboat.
