Hawa Mahal

The king poet Sawai Pratap Singh built this ‘Palace of the winds’.Hawa Mahal 2011.jpg

This is undoubtedly the most well known monuments of Jaipur and is also its icon. Located in the City Palace complex, it looks best from the street outside. This five story building overlooking the busy bazaar street is a fascinating example of Rajput architecture and art, with its 953 windows delicately honeycombed pink sandstone known as ‘Jharokhas’. It was originally built for the ladies of the royal house to see everyday life and processions in the city from the comfort of their evening.

Most people come here to have a view of the facade, but they can also climb to the top of a wonderful view from the latticed windows.

The famous Hawa Mahal is probably the main monument of Jaipur, which was built so that the women of the royal house could observe the processions of the city through its lattices.
