Likir Monastery

Monastery Likir or Likir Gompa is about 52 kilometers from Leh . It is picturesquely situated on a small hill in the valley, near the Indus River and the village of Saspol about 9.5 kilometers (5.9 miles) north of the Srinagar road to Leh Belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and was Built in 1065 by Lama Duwang Chosje, under the command of the fifth king of Ladakh , Lhachen Gyalpo (LHA-chen-rgyal-po).
The monastery was surrounded by the bodies of the great serpent spirits, the Naga-rajas (Nanda and Taksako) so their name became widely recognized as Likir (The Naga surrounded).
