Stakna Monastery

The Stakna Monastery is located at a distance of 25 Kms from Leh on the right bank of the Indus River. The monastery forms part of one of the many religious properties offered to the great holy scholar of Bhutan called Chosje Jamyang Palkar in about 1580 AD by the Namgam Dharmaraja Jamyang who had been invited to Ladakh. The monastery was built on a hill in the form of a nose Of tiger and what its name was given like Stakna (nose of the tiger).
The most important image of the monastery is that of the sacred Arya Avalokitesvara of Kamrup (Assam). There are about 30 monks in residence. The successive reincarnation of the act Stakna Tulku as the holders of the monastery and continue to fulfill the responsibility of keeping the teachings of the Dugpa order well. The monasteries of branches connected to Stakna are those of mud and Kharu and those of Stakrimo, Bardan and Sani in Zanskar .
