Vatakara is a coastal municipality in Kozhikode district of Kerala , a state of southern India , occupying an area of ​​21.32 km2. It is the seat of Vatakara Taluk. This place is old Kadathanadu and was part of the northern Malabar province of Malabar District in the state of Madras during British Raj.

This is the third largest city in northern Malabar. The city is located next to a river known by different names like Moorad river, river or river Kuttiadi Kotakkal. Originally known as Vadakkekara (North Shore) because of its position with respect to the Poto Kottakkal , the place was renamed Vatakara by popular usage afterwards. This city is also known as Badagara.
