Mandore

Mandore was the former capital of the Maharajas of Marwar and is located about 5 kilometers north of the city of Jodhpur , but was later abandoned by the security of Mehrangarh. Here you will find the Dewals, the cenotaphs of the ancient rulers of Jodhpur.

Unlike the usual chhatri in the form of cenotaphs typical of Rajasthan, they were built along the lines of a Hindu temple, four stories high, with fine columns and an elegant spire, all in red sandstone. The most impressive is the Dewal of Maharaja Ajit Singh (who reigned between 1678-1724). The cenotaphs are set in beautiful gardens.

Nearby is the Hall of Heroes, dedicated to various deities and legendary Rajput folk heroes, their statues are carved into the rock and painted in bright colors. Next door is a large hall called “The Three Hundred Million Sanctuary” filled with bright color images of the various Hindu Gods.

As you climb up the hill, you come to the ruined city of Mandore, with its old palace. The beautiful Maharani cenotaphs set off on a rocky out-crop, is ten minutes from the hill. Today its extensive gardens with high rock terrace make it a popular local attraction.
