Edakkal Caves, Wayanad – Kerala

Edakkal Caves are two natural caves in a remote location in Edakkal, 25 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala . The rock wall contains some interesting sculptures, representing human and animal figures and objects of human use and symbols. Inside the caves are pictorial writings believed to date to at least 5000 BC, from the Neolithic man, indicating the presence of a prehistoric civilization or settlement in this region. Edakkal Stone Age carvings are rare and are the only known examples of southern India. The petroglyphs inside the cave are of at least three distinct types. The oldest can date back more than 8,000 years. Evidence suggests that caves were inhabited by Edakkal several times at different points in history.
