Willingdon Island,Island, Kochi – Kerala

Willingdon Island is an island, part of the city of Kochi , in the state of Kerala , India . Much of the present island of Willingdon was reclaimed from Lake Kochi, dredging land fill around the island already existed, but it was tiny natural. The island of Willingdon is significant for being home to the Kochi Port, as well as the Kochi Naval Base (the Southern Naval Command) of the Indian Navy and the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology a constituent unit of the Indian Research Council Agricultural.

The island is also home to another establishment associated with the port namely the Cochin Port Fund Office (which controls the port of Kochi), the Customs Office, More than two dozen export and import offices, warehouses, some hotels and business centers.

The island was created during the construction of the modern port of Kochi in 1936 with the ground dredged out while deepening the Vembanad Lake to accommodate the new port of Kochi. It was named in honor of Lord Willingdon, the governor of ancient Madras who ordered the commissioning of the project. Robert Bristow, the main protagonist and the engineer of the project belongs the first building on the island. Today the whole land belongs to Cochin Port Trust and the Indian Navy.
