Udaipur, the city of lakes!

Udaipur is also known as the “City of Lakes” was also the historical capital of the ancient kingdom of Mewar. With a glorious history and culture this beautiful place in Rajasthan is often called the “Venice of the East”. Many of the palaces of the region have been converted into luxury hotels turn them into popular tourist delights. Udaipur is also the center for performing arts, crafts and its famous miniature paintings.

Jag Niwas, the Lake Palace is located in the middle of Lake Pichola it is the best architectural and cultural example of wonder. The Grand City Palace along the lake with the Sajjan Garh, Monzon Palace on the hill above enhances the beauty of this magnificent city.

Maharana Udai Singh founded Udaipur in 1559 AD. According to a legend Udai Singh was led by a holy man meditating on the hill near Lake Pichola to establish his capital in that same place. Surrounded by Aravali, forests and lakes this place was less vulnerable to the external invasion than Chittaurgarh. Maharana Udai Singh died in 1572 and was succeeded by Maharana Pratap who bravely defended the attacks of Mughal on Udaipur. Maharana Pratap is the most revered Rajput icon who bravely fought against the Mughals at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576.
