Spituk Monastery

Spituk Monastery or Gompa Spituk is a Buddhist monastery in the district of Leh , Ladakh , North India , 8 kilometers from Leh. It was founded in the 11th century by Od-of the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od, when they come to Maryul. He introduced a monastic community. When Rinchen Zangpo, the translator arrived there, said that an exemplary religious community would arise there and so the monastery was called Spituk (Exemplary).
The main statue is that of the Lord Buddha.Within this statue, there is a sacred image of Amitayus, on the length of the fingers of height, presents Kind Takspa Bum-Lde by the great Tsongkhapa. Each year, from the 27th to the 29th of the Tibetan month of the 11th, the sacred dance associated with the Feast of the Gustor takes place. Stok Monastery , Sankar Monastery and Saboo Monastery are branches of the Spituk Monastery. The headlines of all these monasteries are the successive reincarnations of Skyabsje Bakula Rinpoche. The monastery belongs to the Gelugpa Order. There are about 100 monks in the monastery of Spituk.
